February 19, 2026 – 06:30
On the afternoon of February 18, 2026, a grass/debris fire was started by a cutting torch operator at 13th Street and Fair Street in Alva, Oklahoma. The fire spread to the north and east toward the BNSF Railroad and through the salvage yard toward 11th Street.
The fire produced intense, erratic flames driven by pockets of fuel hidden beneath metal heaps and within vehicle interiors. Periodic small explosions were heard as pressurized cylinders, fuel tanks, and aerosol cans ruptured. Sharp popping and crackling sounds echoed throughout the yard as tires, wiring, and plastics ignited. Thick, black smoke reduced visibility and made it difficult for crews to identify safe travel lanes or locate hot spots.
Crews reported several obstacles, including: obstructed access routes within the salvage yard; unstable footing; heat pockets under debris; water application difficulties; and ongoing auditory hazards.
Firefighters established defensive lines around the most intense areas, then transitioned to an interior approach once safe access points were created.
At approximately 04:30 the fire was deemed significantly contained and two units continue to monitor the fire line perimeter, extinguishing flareups, and other defense strategies. This will continue to be monitored closely as the forecast projects north winds and continued low humidity for February 19, 2026.
Responding departments included 30 apparatus and over 60 firefighters from all Woods County departments: Alva, Capron, Dacoma, Freedom, Greenleaf, and Waynoka. Additional firefighting support was also provided by Woods County District One and neighboring farmers with heavy equipment. Alva EMS and Alva Police Department, as well as the Woods County Sherrif’s Office also provided support to the firefighting efforts.
Public notice on this fire event was not typical due to a related active law enforcement investigation - law enforcement agencies requested that the City of Alva limit public notifications regarding the fire, except as necessary to ensure public safety. Law enforcement agencies and City of Alva personnel maintained security of the response area. Individual notifications were handled accordingly. At no point was it deemed necessary to notify the public in mass format. And at no point did the public interfere with the fire response or the law enforcement investigation.
The law enforcement investigation was necessary due to an unwitnessed event concerning a victim of multiple self-inflicted gunshot wounds, which the individual died as a result of the injuries. The City of Alva does not have additional comments on the law enforcement investigation currently.
All other responders and members of the community are free from harm. With the exception of minimal repairs to Engine One that were completed on scene, no City of Alva fire response apparatus sustained any damage beyond normal wear and tear. All departments, personnel, and apparatus are ready to respond if needed.
The City of Alva is appreciative of all responders and those who have made donations to aid in the response efforts.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

ORIGINAL POST: City of Alva crews have been notified of a sewer issue on the south side of the downtown square. We do not yet know the extent of the area(s) impacted or the nature of the problem.
Please use caution when flushing toilets and running water in this area - if you can avoid doing either for a little bit while we determine what’s going on, and conduct repairs, that would be appreciated.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The City of Alva Water Department has been dispatched to Apache Dr. for reports of a water outage. This has been determined to be the result of freezing temperatures where contract crews have been working. At this time, no line breaks are known to have occurred, Contract crews have been called back to Alva to thaw these lines and City of Alva Crews are assisting in this. If you are without water, please call or text the On Call Water Department staff at 580.748.2685. We will continue to update as the situation changes.
